Dullahan Becomes Fourth Horse to Qualify for Classic

DEL MAR, Calif. (August 26, 2012) – Donegal Racing’s 3-year-old Dullahan, became the fourth horse to qualify for the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge series after winning Sunday’s TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar by a half-length over favored Game on Dude in track record time of 1:59.54.

The Breeders’ Cup Challenge is a global series of 73 stakes races whose winners receive automatic starting positions into a corresponding race of the Breeders’ Cup World Championships, which will be held November 2-3 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.

Ridden by Joel Rosario and trained by Dale Romans, Dullahan joins Ron the Greek, who won the Stephen Foster Handicap, Game on Dude, winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup and Fort Larned, who won the Whitney Handicap as the other qualifiers for this year’s Classic.

Under the enhancements of the Challenge series, Breeders’ Cup Limited will:

  • Pay the $150,000 entry fee for Dullahan to start in the Classic
  • Provide the winning stable a $10,000 travel allowance for the Championships

The Breeders’ Cup Classic will be run on November 3 and will be televised live and in primetime on NBC.

A chestnut son of Even the Score, Dullahan won the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes and was third in the Kentucky Derby earlier this year. He came into the Pacific Classic off a fifth place finish in the Haskell Invitational at Monmouth Park.
