Where to Watch/Listen During Stephen Foster Handicap Week
Justify’s win last Saturday in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets and his validation as the 13th Triple Crown winner has sent waves of excitement percolating throughout horse racing and into the larger sports universe as well. Just in time to keep building momentum, prep races for this fall’s 35th Breeders’ Cup World Championships are ready to roll out, with one or more scheduled for most weekends up until the Breeders’ Cup is held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 2-3.
Many of these prep races will be televised by NBC Sports – including two scheduled for this Saturday, June 16, under Churchill Downs’ iconic twin spires. The Fleur de Lis Handicap (a qualifier for the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff) and the Stephen Foster Handicap (a qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Classic) will be televised on NBCSN from 8:30-10 p.m. ET as part of NBC Sports’ “Win and You’re In Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series Presented by America’s Best Racing” schedule. The winners of both races last year – Forever Unbridled in the Fleur de Lis, and Gun Runner in the Stephen Foster – went on to take the Longines Distaff and the Breeders’ Cup Classic, respectively, at Del Mar.
NBC’s broadcast team will be anchored by Laffit Pincay Jr. with analysts Randy Moss and Jerry Bailey, and will include several other members of the team that covered Justify’s run to the Triple Crown.
A highlight of the week’s radio coverage is “The Winner’s Circle” podcast presented by SB Nation and America’s Best Racing. The upcoming podcast airs June 16 at 10 a.m. Eastern on SB Nation Radio and on the SB Nation Radio app and is hosted by Bram Weinstein. The scheduled featured guest is ESPN anchor and reporter Chris Fowler.

Like all of racing we are profoundly saddened by the loss of a life at any racetrack and we are heartbroken for those whose livelihoods are dedicated to the care of our horses. As an organization, the Breeders’ Cup stands for the highest levels of safety and integrity. We support the effort by The Stronach Group to propose important changes and we commit to working with the racing industry in California and elsewhere to achieve meaningful reform on a national basis.
