Through Oct. 16, 2009, Baze was ranked 15th among North American riders with 134 victories from 856 mounts and $7,214,161 in earnings. He was winning at a 16% rate and finishing in the money 43% of the time.
Has had seven Breeders' Cup mounts to date, all finishing out of the money. His best finishes were with his two mounts in 2008, a fifth place with Mast Track in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, and a sixth place with Awesome Gem in the Breeders' Cup Mile.
Major mounts in 2009 include: Blind Luck (G1 Oak Leaf Stakes), Battle of Hastings (G2T Virginia Derby, G2T Colonial Turf Stakes, G3 Baldwin Stakes and La Puente Stakes), Informed (G2 San Diego Handicap and G2 Californian Stakes), Carlsbad (G2 Hollywood Oaks, G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap and G3 Santa Paula Stakes), Gotta Have Her (G2T Palomar Handicap, G3T Las Cienegas, 2nd in G1T John C. Mabee), Monterey Jazz (G2 American Handicap), Dixie Chatter (G2 Arcadia Handicap, third in G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile Handicap), Alpha Kitten (G2 Santa Ynez Stakes), Century Park (G3 Santa Isabel Stakes and TVG California Cup Distance Handicap) and Afleet Eagle (Oceanside Stakes).
Missed two weeks during Del Mar's race meet because of a broken pinky finger on his left hand. He returned to action on September 4, riding favored Carlsbad to a track record-setting victory in the G3 Rancho Bernardo Handicap going the 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.93, over Del Mar's synthetic Polytrack surface.
Won five G1 stakes in 2008, including a victory in the Hollywood Gold Cup with Mast Track, the Kilroe Mile with Ever a Friend and the Del Mar Futurity with Midshipman.
Moved to Southern California from Washington state and started career in 1999. Worked six months for trainer John Sadler, who gave him a leg up on his first winner, Fleeting Wonder, on Oct. 31, 1999, at Oak Tree at Santa Anita Park.
Received Eclipse Award as nation's outstanding apprentice for 2000, the first California-based apprentice to be so honored since Steve Valdez in 1973.
First win as a journeyman was aboard Done Dancing on Dec. 14, 2000, at Hollywood Park ... Won first G1 race aboard Avanzado in the Ancient Title Breeders' Cup Handicap during 2003 Oak Tree race meeting.
Led all Southern California-based riders with 246 winners in 2000. Then, in 2001, recorded 196 victories in his first year as a journeyman, often a difficult transition.
Won his first riding title at the 2004 Hollywood Park spring/summer meet with 59 victories. Then 21, he was the youngest rider to achieve that goal since Laffit Pincay, Jr., in 1968.
Rode 1,000th winner on March 11, 2005, aboard Mashiko a Santa Anita.
Born into one of the biggest race riding families in the nation. His father (Earl Baze) and mother (Cammie) are former jockeys. Second cousin Russell, based in Northern California, is the leading active rider in number of victories and is in the Hall of Fame. Grandfather Carl Baze trained horses for 50 years in Washington State. Uncle Gary Baze, all-time leading jockey at Longacres in Washington State, is still active at Emerald Downs. Grandfather Carl Baze trained horses for 50 years in Washington State. Russell's brother, Dale, rode and retired and cousin Michael C. Baze rides in Southern California as well.
Was introduced to racing at Emerald Downs, where his father trained horses, shod horses and worked on the starting gate. "I grew up wanting to do it (ride) since I was three or four years old," said Baze, who later broke horses for his dad and worked as a groom.
Sought help from a nutitionist for an eating disorder in 2005 and developed a different eating plan.
Hobbies including fishing and hunting and playing with his three dogs, Rawhide, a blue heeler; Cowboy, a black lab and Charlotte, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
