Residence: John and David live in Lexington, Ky., while Allen and Edward reside on the 1,200-acre farm in Midway, Ky., just west of Lexington
Racing Background: Glencrest Farm was established in 1950 by John W. Greathouse and is now operated by his sons. Edward handles the farm’s cattle, tobacco, hay, straw and other farming activities; David works on marketing and stallion seasons; Allen oversees the broodmare operation; and “I wander around from one trouble spot to another and hear all the bad news,” John said with a laugh
Racing Career: Raced Military, 12th in 1998 Breeders' Cup Mile, in partnership with The Thoroughbred Corp. and Three Lantern Stable ... David Greathouse raced Quick Call, (eighth in 1989 Mile) in partnership with Warner L. Jones Jr. … Raced graded stakes winner Zoftig in partnership with Mr. and Mrs. Michael Walts, winning the 2000 G1 Selene Stakes in Woodbine … Honey Ryder’s victory in the $1 million E.P. Taylor Stakes, a Canadian G1 race at Woodbine, in 2005 gave the farm its first major victory as an owner.
Breeding/Racing Operation: Glencrest’s small racing stable has yielded big results in 2009 as their filly Devil May Care became a contender for the Grey Goose Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies when she captured the G1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont in just her second career start this September…Purchased for $110,000 by John Greathouse at the 2008 Keeneland September yearling sale, Devil May Care was consigned by Wavertree Stables at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton March 2-year-olds in training sale but was bought back for $400,000. “I told (Wavertree’s) Ciaran Dunne at the time I wasn’t a motivated seller,” John Greathouse recalled. “If I think a horse is a really nice horse, I’d like to be able to keep it and...she just kind of stood out over all of them.”… Glencrest typically maintains a small racing stable that includes horses that do not sell as yearlings and currently has about four horses in training. “I’ve always believed that a person needs to believe in the product they’re selling,” John Greathouse said….Glencrest also co-bred graded stakes winner Munnings, who was installed as the morning-line favorite for the 2008 Bessemer Trust Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Munnings was a $1.7 million purchase as a two-year-old at Fasig-Tipton, after Glencrest sold him for $150,000 as a yearling at Saratoga. In 2009, multiple G2 winner Munnings is pointed toward the Breeders' Cup Sprint. ….Glencrest has a long-standing reputation for breeding competitive runners and has the rare distinction of selling yearlings that went on to win both the Kentucky Derby (1960 winner Venetian Way) and the Kentucky Oaks (1996 winner Pike Place Dancer). They have bred more than 90 stakes winners. Among the successful runners offered by the farm in recent years are G1 winners Zoftig, Adieu, Flying Snowdrop, and Roamin Rachel…. In 2006, the Glencrest silks were carried by Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf third-place finisher and G1 winner Honey Ryder ….Honey Ryder earned more than $2.7 million for Glencrest and concluded her career with a runner-up finish in the in the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf behind eventual champion Lahudood. That year they also were represented by Panty Raid who earned her first G1 win in the American Oaks at Hollywood Park …David Greathouse is a partner with Johnny T.L. Jones Jr., Dan Kenny and Kerry Cauthen in Four Star Sales, which today is main focus of Glencrest’s sales operation… Recent headliners that are graduates of the Four Star Sales ranks include G1 winner Hystericalady and Da' Tara, upset winner of the 2008 Belmont Stakes…Four Star Sales also consigned Honey Ryder when she was sold to Adena Springs for $1.75 million at the 2008 Fasig-Tipton November mixed sale and Panty Raid when she sold to bloodstock agent John Ferguson for $2.5 million at the same sale ... Glencrest was the longtime home of influential sires Clever Trick and Wavering Monarch, who both died of old age in 2004. Clever Trick is the grandsire of Breeders' Cup winners and champions Favorite Trick (1997 Juvenile) and Phone Chatter (1993 Juvenile Fillies), both by his son Phone Trick … Wavering Monarch is broodmare sire of Military, who stands at Glencrest along with Champali … Glencrest bred Breeders' Cup starters Adieu (seventh in the 2005 Juvenile Fillies), Battle Won (11th in the ’05 Sprint) and Speed Dialer, a granddaughter of Clever Trick who finished fourth in the 1991 Juvenile Fillies…. Farm is home to approximately 80 broodmares owned by the Greathouse family or clients…One of the more prominent members of the Glencrest broodmare band was G1 winner Happy Ticket, who was raised on the farm on behalf of owner/breeder Stewart Madison. Happy Ticket died in May 2009 about a week after foaling a healthy Empire Maker filly. Her only other foal is a yearling colt by Distorted Humor.
