Haras de Pirque

Professional Background: Businessman and entrepreneur
Breeding/Racing Operation: Matte bought the nearly 1,500-acre property near the town of Pirque, in the Los Lagos (Lakes) Region of Chile in 1991 ... He had two ambitions –to improve an existing horse farm, and, to establish a large winery ... They planted about 300 acres of vines in 1992-93 and now produce a variety of reds and whites under the Haras de Pirque name ... The name was that of the first Thoroughbred stud farm in Chile, which was established nearby in 1892 ... Matte is assisted by his son, Eduardo B. Matte, who is the farm's commercial vice president, while Jose Luis Gatica is the farm manager ... They stood the exceptional sire, Hussonet (by Mr. Prospector), seven-time champion stallion in Chile, from 2000 to 2004 ... He was sold to Arrowfield Stud in Australia at the end of 2002 and Pirque is now home to the stallions Hardy, Lord Florey, Merchant of Venice and Smooth Performance. All four were bred in the United States but raced in Ireland or England ... In addition to Host, who has had two runnings in the Breeders' Cup Mile (7th in 2005, 5th in 2007), the best horses bred by Haras de Pirque are Wild Spirit (2003 G1 Ruffian Handicap), and Penamacor and Printemps, respectively Chilean champion 3-year-old colt and filly of 2000 ... Haras de Pirque, the only breeding, raising and training facility in Chile, is home to nearly 200 mares and foals. They sell many of their yearlings but maintain a 30-strong racing stable ... In addition to the Thoroughbreds, Matte also is a collector of old carriages and keeps a stable of nearly 30 carriage horses.
