Racing Career: Puglisi owned a small claiming stable in Arizona in the early 1990s but only got back into racing at his current scale in 2003 when he formed Puglisi Stables, LLC ... Claimed a half-dozen horses in 2003 and then expanded his stable to nearly 40 runners by the end of 2004 ... In 2008, he expanded and restructured his operation into a preferred-class LLC named Puglisi Racing, LLC and spent $4.5 million on approximately 30 2-year-olds ... Including his older horses, he has about 50 runners in training with Steve Klesaris in the Mid-Atlantic region ... Klesaris owns a 10 percent share of most of Puglisi’s horses ... “I saw Steve’s abilities and felt he was the right man to start a team with,” Puglisi said ... After wintering in Florida for years, Puglisi says a division of his horses will race in California during the winter months of 2008-09 ... Puglisi and Klesaris’ success at sales dates back to 2005 ... The duo purchased Diabolical for $300,000 at the February 2005 Ocala Breeders’ Sales 2-year-olds in training sale ... In 2007, Diabolical won the G2 Vanderbilt at Saratoga and the G3 Maryland Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Pimlico ... Though Diabolical would have been one of the favorites in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Sprint, Klesaris and Puglisi sold Diabolical to Darley for an undisclosed amount ... Diabolical won eight races and earned slightly more than $750,000 for Puglisi ... Another 2005 purchase was multiple grade 2 and grade 3 winner Miraculous Miss, a Mr. Greeley filly he bought for $350,000 with Klesaris at the May 2005 Fasig-Tipton 2-year-olds in training sale ... Miraculous Miss was second at 43-1 odds in the inaugural running of the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint ... After that race, she tackled the boys in the DeFrancis Memorial Dash, finishing third ... A candidate for a return trip to the F&M Sprint, she is approaching $1 million in career earnings ... Puglisi also is co-owner of the grade 1 winning 2-year-old filly Mani Bhavan ... Puglisi purchased a 50 percent share of the filly from Mike Ryan following her win in the grade 2 Adirondack and was quickly rewarded with a subsequent victory in the grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga ... “She really blossomed at Saratoga,” he said of his Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies prospect. “We’ve seen a huge change in her. She has an exceptional turn of foot and it’s exciting to have a talented horse like her.” ... Among Puglisi’s other 2008 stakes winners is Roman Emperor, a 3-year-old who took the Barbaro Stakes on the Preakness undercard ... In that race, Roman Emperor finished a half-length ahead of Da’ Tara, who rebounded to win the Belmont Stakes in his next start ... A $110,000 2-year-old buy, Roman Emperor was given a freshening after the Barbaro and is expected to be among the horses Puglisi will send to California for a winter campaign ... Puglisi’s other stakes winners include Ticket to Seattle, Little Miss Zip, Master of Disaster, Private Lap, Mighty Mecke, and Misty Sixes.
