Strengths: Her last 12 starts have come in grade 1 or 2 company, and she has three grade 1 victories on her resume – the Las Virgenes and Santa Anita Oaks at Santa Anita in ’06 and the Santa Margarita at that same track in ’07. She’s only finished worse than fourth once in her 15-race career.
In the Genes: Her sire, Thunder Gulch, won four grade 1 stakes as a 3-year-old in ’95 including the Kentucky Derby. His daughter, Spain, was the upset winner of the ’00 Distaff. Balance’s dam, Vertigineaux, won only two of seven lifetime starts, and both of those victories came on turf.
Status: Following her sixth-place finish in the Distaff, Balance was retired and will begin a new career as a broodmare at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky.
Bet You Didn’t Know: Trainer David Hofmans has won twice from 10 career Breeders’ Cup starters, capturing the ’03 Distaff with the 40-1 shot Adoration and the ’96 Classic with another bomber in 19-1 shot Alphabet Soup.
