  • Family: wife Liliana; children Patricia, Edgar Jr. and Luis ... His father was a trainer in Peru; brother Jorge, a former jockey, is a trainer in Maryland, and brother Anibal rides at Philadelphia Park.
  • Through Oct. 4, 2009, Prado ranked 13th in the nation by earnings with $7,239,621. He had 98 victories from 808 starts, with a 12% win rate and an in-the-money rate of 40%.
  • Has three Breeders’ Cup wins to his credit – the G1 Emirate Airlines Breeders' Cup Distaff (Round Pond, 2006), the G1 TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (Silver Train, 2005), and the G1 Alberto V05 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (Folklore, 2005).

  • Was inducted into the National Musuem of Racing’s Hall of Fame in 2008 before a standing-room only crowd … Received three standing ovations while issuing his acceptance speech.
  • Authored the book “My Guy Barbaro,” a chronicle of his relationship with the Michael Matz trainee who he rode to a 6 1/2-length triumph in the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands before Barbaro broke down in the G1 Preakness Stakes. The memoir, which follows the colt’s losing battle with laminitis, was released in April of 2008.
  • Rode his 6,000th winner, Sumphin, at Gulfstream on Feb. 10, 2008.

  • Missed the 2007 Breeders’ Cup due to a broken right ankle suffered in a racing accident at Saratoga … Returned to the saddle in November of that year.
  • Was awarded the 2006 Eclipse Award for outstanding jockey… also was voted the 2006 ESPY-winning jockey of the year, and was presented with NYRA’s 2006 Mike Venezia Award for extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship.
  • Won his third Saratoga riding title in 2006 after taking Belmont’s spring/summer meet… then tied with Eibar Coa for the Belmont fall meet title.
  • Led all riders in New York in 2005 with 206 wins, earned career-high purse total of $18,615,366 to rank him second in the nation by earnings.
  • Presented with the Fourstardave Award for Special Achievement at Saratoga by the New York Turf Writers Association in 2005, an honor he also received in 2002.
  • Won his 5,000th career race aboard Wynn Dot Comma in the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park on March 13, 2004.
  • Named the 54th recipient of the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award in 2003.  
  • Has twice stopped Triple Crown attempts with Belmont Stakes victories. In 2002, he thwarted War Emblem’s attempt by winning with Sarava, in the process setting a stakes record for highest win mutual at $142.50. In 2004, he teamed with Nick Zito trainee Birdstone to end Smarty Jones’ hopes for a Triple Crown.
  • Captured his first New York Racing Association riding title at the 2000 Belmont Park Fall Championship Meet with 38 wins.
  • Charity of choice is the Belmont Park-based Anna House, a child day care center for the children of backstretch workers that is overseen by the non-profit Belmont Child Care Association and run by the independent child care provider Bright Horizons.
  • Moved from Maryland to New York in 1999 to ride for trainer John Kimmel when Richard Migliore, Kimmel’s first-call rider at the time, was injured.
  • Led the nation in victories three consecutive years, 1997 (536), 1998 (470) and 1999 (402). His 536 in ’97 made him the fourth rider in history to win 500 races in one year… Much of that success was gained in Maryland, where he ruled that circuit for several years.
  • Came to the United States as a contract rider for trainer Manny Azpurua in Florida in 1986… Began riding in his native Peru after graduating from the jockey school there ...  First winner was Tatin in October of 1983.
  • One of 11 children, Prado attributes much of his success to the teachings of his mother, who died shortly before his triumph in the Derby. She succumbed to breast cancer in Peru, unable to get back into the U.S. for care after her visa had expired.
