    Moss remembers the date he began work in the record industry, Nov. 8, 1958. He first worked in New York's Brill Building, legendary headquarters of the great songwriters of the 1960s and 1970s, before heading to California in 1960 ... The “M” of A&M Records, Jerry co-founded with Herb Alpert what would become the world’s largest independent record company. A&M was sold to Polygram in 1990. Rondor Music, Inc., their music publishing company, was sold in 2000 … Alpert and Moss were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006 as nonperformers ... Ann Moss is an artist
  • Racing Background:
    Began owning horses in 1970 through circumstances that began with A&M's first big hit, Alpert's “The Lonely Bull.” Nate Duroff, who manufactured records, advanced Jerry $35,000 worth of credit so that they could produce enough copies to satisfy the demand for the single. Sometime later, Duroff suffered a slight stroke and when Moss asked him what he could do to help, Duroff replied that he could buy a horse with him. Duroff, Moss and Alpert claimed a horse, Angletune, for $12,500 … Claimed more horses in partnership with brothers Herb and Dave Alpert during the 1970s … First stakes winner was Lovely Robbery in the 1981 Santa Ysabel Stakes … Jerry is currently a commissioner on the California Horse Racing Board, having been appointed in 2004
  • Breeding/Racing Operation:
    The Mosses have been enjoying a banner year with undefeated Zenyatta, who is under consideration for either the Breeder's Cup Classic against males or the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic, which she won in 2008 en route to Eclipse Award honors as champion older female. In her final prep race before the Breeders' Cup, Zenyatta, a half-sister multiple stakes winner Balance, extended her undefeated record to 13 with her repeat victory in the G1 Lady's Secret Handicap at Santa Anita. In the process, Zenyatta, who has won seven G1s, equaled a mark set by champion Personal Ensign, who closed out her stellar undefeated career by capturing her 13th career victory in the 1988 Distaff ... She was named for the rock album, Zenyatta Mondatta, by The Police, who recorded for the A&M label ...  Other top horses for the Mosses' in ’09 have been Madeo, named after the popular Italian Restaurant in West Hollywood that has long been one of the Mosses' favorites, and 2007 Santa Anita Derby winner Tiago, who continues racing at age five ... In 2008, Tiago, a homebred, completed a successful season with a third-place finish in the Breeders' Cup Classic ...  Zenyatta, Tiago and Madeo are trained by John Shirreffs ... Prior to Zenyatta, the biggest thrill in racing for the Mosses was winning the 2005 Kentucky Derby with Giacomo. Giacomo, a half-brother to Tiago, finished fourth in the 2006 Breeders’ Cup Classic to close out his career and is currently standing stud at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs Farm in Midway, Ky … Set Them Free, the dam of both Giacomo and Tiago, was named for a song by Sting (lead singer of The Police). Giacomo is named for Sting's son … The Mosses raced Set Them Free, having bought her for $45,000 at the 1992 Fasig-Tipton Florida 2-year-old sale through the late trainer Brian Mayberry … A stakes winner for the Mosses, Set Them Free also is the dam of stakes-placed Sea Jewel, a fourth place finisher in the 2002 Juvenile fillies ... Set Them Free, now 19, is barren for 2010. She had a filly by Empire Maker in '09. She is boarded at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky. She did not have a foal in 2008, but foaled a colt by Pulpit in 2007 named Paro and a colt by Giant’s Causeway named Galayo in 2006. Galayo is currently training with Shirreffs. Alonzo, a 4-year-old Pleasant Tap colt and a full brother to Tiago, also is in Shirreff's barn ... Giacomo's full sister, Styler, is a broodmare at Mill Ridge ... Yearlings purchased by the Mosses are broken in Ocala with fillies going to Jeanne Mayberry and colts going to Robbie Harris … Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs has served as Racing Manager since January of 1984. The bloodstock and sales work in Kentucky is done by David Ingordo, Dottie's son … Mosses own about 75 Thoroughbreds, including about 25 in training scattered among John Shirreffs and John Sadler in Southern California, and Steve Sherman in Northern California … In addition to Tiago and Giacomo, they have bred other stakes winners Kudos, Princess Kali, Van Rouge and Nobo True … Own about 20 broodmares, mostly in Kentucky ... The Thoroughbred Owners of California named Mosses as Owner of the Year and Zenyatta as Horse of the Year for 2008 ... The Mosses have raced 63 stakes winners alone or in partnership ... Through Oct. 24, 2009, they are ranked among the top 40 owners in North American with 28 victories from 108 starts and earnings of $1,403,726.
