Baroness Thatcher
Trainer: William I. Mott Last Jockey: John R. Velazquez Owner(s): Zayat Stables, LLC
/xmlfeed.aspx?action=media%26category=8%26id=20966

2008 Record: (7-1-2-1)
2008 Earnings: $158,991
2008 Win %: 14% In-The-Money %: 57%

Strengths: She certainly hasn’t ducked top-class competition, running in 10 consecutive graded stakes, five of them grade 1s. She’s won at distances ranging from seven furlongs to 1 1/16 miles, and owns plenty of staying power. Her biggest win came in the G3 Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita, but she’s also lit the tote in a trio of grade 1 tests.

Weaknesses: She owns only two wins from 13 lifetime starts and is currently in the midst of a eight-race losing streak. She’s finished behind Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint rivals Dream Rush, Maryfield and Wild Gams in her last three starts. Ran third in her only previous attempt over six furlongs, and perhaps she’d prefer having more ground to work with.

In the Genes: This $1.1 million 2-year-old buy is by ’01 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Johannesburg, who was perfect from seven starts as a freshman, but failed to win at age 3 and was retired. His daughter La Traviata, is another contender for the inaugural Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint, and he’s also sired graded stakes-winning 3-year-olds of ’07 Scat Daddy and Teuflesberg. Johannesburg is the second-leading second-crop sire of ’07. Her graded stakes-placed dam, Natkeeta, earned $81,734 in a 30-race career, and was equally good routing and sprinting. Status: As a result of trainer Patrick Biancone's suspension, Francois Parisel was the trainer of record for Baroness Thatcher's Filly & Mare Sprint run. Following the Breeders' Cup, Baroness Thatcher was transfered to the care of Fabien Ouaki's Fab Oak Farm.

Bet You Didn’t Know: Zayat Stables ran two horses in the ’06 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, finishing 12th with Malt Magic and 13th with Got the Last Laugh.
