Cosmonaut
Trainer: Philip M. Serpe Last Jockey: Julien R. Leparoux Owner(s): Flying Zee Stable
/xmlfeed.aspx?action=media%26category=8%26id=20982

2009 Record: (4-1-0-1)
2009 Earnings: $104,310
2009 Win %: 25% In-The-Money %: 50%

Strengths: Classy veteran has competed at the Grade 1 level in Kentucky, New York, California and Illinois, challenging America’s best at distances from 1 mile to 1 1/2 miles. Possesses excellent tactical speed and can put himself in the race where needed.

Weaknesses: Often fails to seal the deal at the highest levels, his biggest career victories have come at the Grade 3 level and he's winless to date in 8 lifetime Grade 1 tries. He’s best when he can make a soft pace and grind it out on the front end, but that’s something that rarely can be applied at the flat mile distance.

In The Genes: Sire, Lemon Drop Kid, was the 1999 Belmont Stakes winner, denying Charismatic’s Triple Crown bid. Lemon Drop Kid made three Breeders’ Cup appearances, but finished off the board in the Juvenile and Classic (twice). He’s best known at stud for producing 2006 Kentucky Oaks upsetter Lemons Forever.

Status: As a result of trainer Patrick Biancone's suspension, Francois Parisel was the trainer of record for Cosmonaut's Mile run. Following the Breeders' Cup, Cosmonaut was moved to Carlos Martin's barn in New York.

Bet You Didn’t Know: The first cosmonaut in space, Russian Yuri Gagarin, was only 5-feet-2-inches tall, or about 3 inches shorter than Frankie Dettori.
