Sunderland Holdings
Owner(s): David Tsui
Residence: Hong Kong
Family: wife Ling; children Christopher and Christine
Racing Background: His first involvement in racing was in 1991 when he became an owner in the Jean Lesbordes stable in France ... Enjoyed immediate success with Take Risks, winner of three group races between 1992 and 1993 and Adieu Au Roi, winner of the 1992 Prix Hocquart ... However, the real star performer in his stable was Urban Sea, who won the valuable Piaget d'Or at Deauville in 1992 and ended that year running in both the E.P. Taylor Stakes at Woodbine (finishing second to Hatoof) and the Yellow Ribbon Invitational at Santa Anita (finishing last) ... Urban Sea began 1993 with a victory in the Prix Exbury and kept her form very well, winning the Prix Gontaut-Biron in August ... Her finest hour came in the first weekend in October when, at odds of 37-1, she beat White Muzzle by a neck to land the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe ... Kept in training in 1994, she landed the Prix d'Harcourt but was forced into retirement with a fetlock injury after poor performances in both the Prix Ganay and Coronation Cup
Racing Career: Tsui is no longer involved in French racing, and since 2002 his horses have been running in the colors of his children in Ireland, trained by Michael Grassick and, since 2004, John Oxx ... Most recent big race success came with Fairy of The Night, winner of the 2005 Fairy Bridge Stakes at Tipperary
Breeding/Racing Operation: Urban Sea, whose foals are often bred in partnership with Coolmore Stud, has become one of the most successful broodmares of recent years ... All seven of her foals have either won or placed in group or graded stakes, including Urban Ocean, winner of 1999 Gallinule Stakes; Melikah, placed in both the English and Irish Oaks; Galileo, winner of the 2001 English and Irish Derbys and the King George before finishing sixth in the Breeders' Cup Classic; Black Sam Bellamy, who won the 2002 Gran Premio del Jockey Club and the 2003 Tattersalls Gold Cup, and All Too Beautiful, a group winner who finished behind Ouija Board in both the English Oaks (second) and the Irish Oaks (fourth) ... My Typhoon was Urban Sea's sixth foal and fetched a then-record price for a filly foal of $2.955 million when sold in December 2002 to Live Oak Stud ... Her seventh foal, Cherry Hinton, has failed to win in five starts in 2007 but finished fifth in the English Oaks and has been placed in two stakes race ... My Typhoon, 6th in the Filly & Mare Turf in 2006 and 13th in the 2007 Mile, has been the only Breeders' Cup starter for Sunderland Holdings.
