  • Education: Graduated with a degree in psychology from San Francisco State, where he was a pitcher on the baseball team for two years. Also played baseball for Cal State Northridge and College of the Canyons. "I thought I was going to be drafted professionally, but when that didn't happen, I moved on with my life," Suarez said

    Son of Cuban immigrants, he owns Nectar Pharmaceuticals Inc., based in Valencia, a pharmaceutical wholesale company that distributes prescription drugs ... Currently serves as a director of the Thoroughbred Owners of California

  • Racing Background: A racing fan, he became an owner in January of 2001 when a friend asked him and another friend to go three ways in a $12,500 claimer named Running Thunder. "We ran him back in five days, finished second, and he was claimed for $20,000," said Suarez, dazzled with the quick profit
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: He currently owns 40 horses, about 15 in training with Doug O'Neill, his only trainer ... Says he's surprised at how deeply he's become involved in racing, but is having a great time with it. "I didn't think it was the kind of thing you did with your money," he said of investing in horses ... First stakes winner was Sea to See, who won the 2003 TVG Khaled Stakes at Hollywood Park ... Estate Collection became the first graded stakes winner Suarez owned outright when he scored in the 2005 Kentucky Cup Sprint. He then sold a 51 percent interest in him for an undisclosed sum to J. Paul Reddam after the race ... Also owned a 25 percent interest in grade 1 winner Sharp Lisa with Reddam, who owned 65 percent, and Mark Schlesinger. The partners sold Sharp Lisa at the 2006 Fasig-Tipton fall mixed sale, where she topped the sale at $3.4 million ... Suarez was a 50 percent partner in Thor's Echo, winner of the 2006 Breeders' Cup Sprint and the Eclipse Award-winning sprinter that season. Thor's Echo was sold in Jan. 2007 for an undisclosed price to Sheikh Rashid, the eldest son of Sheikh Mohammed ... Suarez Racing also has campaigned stakes winners Grand Appointment, Dancin Olivia, and 2007 graded stakes winner Super Freaky ... Bought Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies contender Grace Anatomy privately after she did not bring her reserve at the 2007 Keeneland spring 2-year-old sale ... Began to expand into the breeding business in 2004 and owns 12 mares divided between Magali Farms in Santa Ynez, Calif., and Bluewater Farm in Kentucky ... Stands two stallions, Atticus (owned outright) and Event of the Year (in partnership with Magali) at Magali.
