  • Professional Background: Lakin owns and operates Lakin General, a rubber and tire recycling company based in Chicago … Also operates an agricultural implement manufacturing plant in Jackson, Ohio
  • Racing Career: Lakin races homebreds not suited for public sales or those that do not bring a sufficient price at auction … Has raced under the name Kathy-Jo Stable and A. Lakin and Sons, Lakland Farm as well as his own name … The star of his stable is Pure Clan, a top candidate for the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf ... A multiple Grade 1 stakes winner, the homebred Pure Clan captured the Grade 2 Golden Rod and Grade 3 Pocahontas at two in 2007 ... Lakin then sold a majority share of the filly to International Equine Acquisitions Holdings (IEAH) and Pegasus Holdings Group in Feb. 2008 ... Following the sale, Pure Clan won the Grade 1 American Oaks and Grade 3 Regret for her connections . . . She then finished 10th in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf . . . In Jan. 2009, Lakin bought out IEAH and Pegasus Holdings Group to regain full ownership of the daughter of Pure Prize . . . Since then she triumphed in the Grade 1 Flower Bowl and Grade 3 Modesty to push her career earnings past the $1.5 million mark ... "I wanted her back for my family's broodmare band, and (IEAH) agreed," Lakin said at the time of the sale. "They were very pleased with the situation. They were very nice to deal with. I think basically, they're interested more in 3-year-old racing. I plan to race her this year and then we'll go from there." ... Lakin also campaigned multiple graded stakes winner Greater Good, who finished 13th in the 2005 Kentucky Derby ... Robert Holthus is his primary trainer
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: In breeding, Lakin and Becky Thomas became partners in a pinhooking venture in 1992 ... They were partners in Lakland farms with divisions in Hudson, N.Y. and Versailles, Ky., and Sequel Bloodstock and Sequel Stallions in Orange Lake, Fla. ... Thomas and Lakin co-owned multiple stakes winner City Zip, who finished seventh in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 2000 and ninth in the Mile in 2001 ... They bred Capeside Lady, sixth in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (now Ladies' Classic) in 2005, and Fleet Indian, who did not finish in the 2006 Distaff but was named champion older female ... Through the Sequel 98 partnership, they bred Healthy Addiction, a two-time starter in the Breeders' Cup Distaff ... Partners bred multiple Grade 1 winner Behaving Badly ...  In 2007, Lakin was a minority owner in Breeders' Cup runners Irish Smoke (12th, Juvenile Fillies) and Dream Rush (5th, Filly & Mare Sprint) ... Also breeds as A.
