Racing Background: Got his start in horse racing while working for his father, trainer John Hennig, as a teenager. While attending Grove City High School, he worked before and after school cleaning stalls, ponying horses and assisting with feed-time chores. He graduated from high school after his junior year in 1982 … Spent two years at The Ohio State University studying veterinary medicine. Racing Career: Went to work for Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg in Southern California in May 1987 at age 22 … Hired by Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas in September 1987. Served as the Lukas assistant trainer in New York for two years, then he was entrusted with his own division at Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Gulfstream Park and various other racetracks. He helped to prepare Kentucky Derby starters Houston, Corporate Report and Dance Floor … Hired to train for Barry Irwin and his ownership syndicate Team Valor on July 1, 1992. First winner was Arabian Ace at Hollywood Park in July 1992 … First stakes winner was Star of Cozzene in the G3 San Gabriel Handicap at Santa Anita on Jan. 1, 1993 … In 1993, his first full year as a trainer, Hennig ranked ninth in the nation in earnings with $4,168,857. He won six graded stakes that year, including the G1 Santa Anita Derby with Personal Hope and the G1 Arlington Million with Star of Cozzene … In 1995, he moved his stable to New York and began training horses for Edward Evans; they have since split but not before enjoying many stakes winners … Major runners trained by Hennig include Gygistar, Raging Fever, Summer Colony, Eddington, Seeking Daylight, Jazzy Barcola, Haddie Be Good, Giant Wrecker, Law Enforcement, La Dolce Vita, Laurentide Ice and Lauren’s Tizzy ... Hennig reached the 1,000th-winner milestone Nov. 10, 2007 when he trained Dinner Break to take the sixth race on closing night at the Meadowlands. In 15 years of training, Hennig’s runners have amassed more than $50,000,000 in purses … In 2008, Hennig has saddled five different stakes winners. Wesley, trained for owner Peter Willmott, won the G2 National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame Stakes at Saratoga on August 4. Hennig also won the G3 Salvator Mile at Monmouth Park on July 5 with Notional ... During the summer of ’08, Hennig took over the training of Red Rocks, winner of the 2006 Breeders' Cup Turf, from Brian Meehan. In his last start for Meehan, Red Rocks handed Curlin his only defeat this season in the G1 Man o' War. Hennig planned to start Red Rocks in the G1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga in August, but scratched the horse when filling was found in an ankle. Red Rocks is not scheduled to have a prep before his third start in the Breeders' Cup. He was third in the Turf last year ... When he isn’t at the track, Hennig said, “I’m going to my kids’ games. I golf some in Florida during the winter, but my hobby is really to spend time with my family.” … Through October 5, Hennig had 51 victories from 356 starts and purse earnings of $2,800,165.
