Strengths: This former $8,000 claimer was haltered by trainer Don Chatlos for $12,500 in August of ’06, and to say that she’s exceeded expectations would be a ridiculous understatement. She’s won four races from seven tries for her current team, including a romping, seven-length wire job in the Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint at Gulfstream. She solidified her class with a fourth behind Hystericalady in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill and a second to the summer hot-shot River’s Prayer in the Grade 1 Princess Rooney at Calder. She possesses sensational early speed.
Weaknesses: She’s never won a graded stakes, and very much appears to be a “needs the early lead to win” type. She tired very badly in her final Breeders’ Cup prep, finishing a distant eighth and last in the Presque Isle Downs Masters over the synthetic Tapeta surface. Is she capable of bouncing back from that?
In the Genes: Her father is the multiple Grade 1-winning route speedster Bertrando, who banked $3.1 million in a 24-race career. He started in three Breeders’ Cups, finishing second in both the ’91 Juvenile and ’93 Classic. He counts many stakes winners amongst his progeny, including the brilliant Officer, a multiple graded stakes victor at age two. Her mother, Witchy, earned $170,277 in a 17-race career, and all six of her victories came sprinting. She’s a full-sister to the graded stakes-placed Stormy Jack, who earned just shy of $600,000 in his career.
Bet You Didn’t Know: Trainer Don Chatlos won with his first ever Breeders’ Cup starter, capturing the ’04 Mile with Singletary, who returned the following year to finish eighth in the same race.
