John Oxx


  • Born: July 14, 1950 in Ireland
  • Residence: County Kildare, Ireland, where he trains at Killabeg Stables on the Curragh
  • Family: wife Caitriona; children Deidrie, Aoife and Kevin
  • Racing Background: His father John Oxx Sr. was a very successful trainer who won eight Irish classics and it was the younger Oxx's ambition to follow in his father's footsteps … He also is qualified as a veterinarian, graduating from University College Dublin
  • Racing Career: Took out his training license in 1979, succeeding his father … During the 1980s, Oxx forged a relationship with the Aga Khan that remains today. He also was the major Irish trainer for Sheikh Mohammed … Oxx has trained multiple group 1 winners all over the world and his best horses would include Sinndar, winner in 2000 of the English and Irish Derbys and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe; Timarida, who won the E.P. Taylor Stakes in Canada, the Beverly D. Stakes at Arlington as well as the Irish Champion Stakes; Azamour, winner of the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, who finished second in the 2005 Breeders' Cup Turf; and Ridgewood Pearl, who took the 1995 Breeders' Cup Mile at Belmont Park … His most recent group 1 success came in the 2006 Irish St Leger with Kastoria ... Through Oct. 11, 2007, Oxx has sent out 44 winners from 233 runners in Ireland for fifth place in the trainer's table … He also is former chairman of the Irish National Stud and the Irish Trainers Association.
