  • Born: Oct. 22, 1945, Barbados
  • Residence: Newmarket, England at Freemason Lodge Stables where he trains
  • Family: children, Robert and Caroline ... He is the son of the former Chief of Police of Barbados ... Stoute was knighted in 1998 for his services to tourism in Barbados
  • Racing Background: Once a racing commentator for Radio Barbados, Stoute came to England at age 19 to become a pupil-assistant for trainer Pat Rohan, with subsequent spells with trainers Doug Smith and Tom Jones in the same role
  • Racing Career: Began training in his own right in 1972 and saddled his first winner with Sandal (owned by his father) at Newmarket on April 28, 1972 … His first major winners were the sprinters Alphadamus and Blue Cashmere in 1973, when they won the important sprint handicaps – The Stewards’ Cup and Ayr Gold Cup, respectively … He soon moved on to far greater things and has been champion English trainer on nine occasions, the first in 1981 then 1986, 1989, 1994, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2005 and 2006 … Stoute has won the Epsom Derby four times, with Shergar (1981), Shahrastani (1986), Kris Kin (2003) and North Light (2004) … Other leading horses he has trained looks like a virtual Who’s Who in European racing. A sampling includes: Shadeed, Marwell, Ajdal, Golan, Among Men, Zilzal, Sonic Lady, Kartajana, Pilsudski, Singspiel, Islington and Russian Rhythm … Pilsudski and Singspiel finished one-two in the 1996 Breeders’ Cup Turf, and both went on to win the Japan Cup (Pilsudski in 1997 and Singspiel in 1996) ... Kalanisi brought him his second Breeders’ Cup victory when winning the Turf in 2000, Islington won the 2003 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf and Conduit won the 2008 Breeders' Cup Turf … Stoute became the first trainer to accumulate £2 million in domestic earnings in 1986 … Group 1 triumphs from Notnowcato and Peeress allowed him to win the British trainers' championship in 2006 with 107 wins from 487 runners and just over £3 million (about $5.2 million) in prize money... Notnowcato starred again in 2007, winning both the G1 Coral Eclipse Stakes and the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup, but Aidan O'Brien denied Stoute another championship ... In 2008, he enjoyed three European Group 1 victories courtesy of Conduit (St Leger), Linngari (Bayerisches Zuchtrennen in Germany) and Promising Lead (Pretty Polly Stakes in Ireland) ... The big highlight of his 2009 season was the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth at Ascot in July when he saddled the first three home - Conduit, Tartan Bearer and Ask. He also won the Coronation Cup with Ask in June and is set to regain the trainer's title. To Oct 15, he had sent out 78 winners from 336 runners and collected $4.6 million in prizemoney in Britain to leave him well clear of Aidan O'Brien in the title race ... In his leisure time, Stoute is a massive cricket fan and also enjoys hunting and skiing.
