Racing Background: Spawr began at the track during high school, when he played football in Downey, Calif. ... Worked as an assistant blacksmith in 1958 ... Helped open and manage Chino Veterinary Hospital ... Assisted trainer Joe Manzi before going on his own
Racing Career: Won first race with Cuda May at Bay Meadows in 1977 ... Scored initial stakes victory with Darling Deanna in the 1983 Black Swan Stakes at Fairplex Park ... Six-time leading trainer on Southern California circuit: Del Mar in 1990, 1994; Santa Anita in 1990-91, 1995-96; and Oak Tree in 2000, 2001 ... A successful claiming trainer for much of his career, Spawr claimed the filly Exchange for $50,000 in 1991 and won three Grade 1 stakes with her: the 1993 Santa Ana and Santa Barbara handicaps at Santa Anita and the 1994 Matriarch at Hollywood Park. Also claimed Sensational Star for $32,000 and won three graded sprints with him in 1989-90 ... Other major stakes winners include Enjoy the Moment, Saratoga Gambler, Mister Gennaro, Sensational Star, My Sonny Boy, Drouilly's Boy and Super Ready ... Has enjoyed great run with late-blooming sprinter Bordonaro, winner of the G1 Ancient Title at Santa Anita in 2006 ... Biggest win in 2007 came with Bordonaro in the Count Fleet Sprint Handicap at Oaklawn Park, the horse's second consecutive victory in that race ... Maintains close bonds with legendary jockey Laffit Pincay Jr., whom he consistenly rode during the rider's twilight years. Pincay credited the trainer with helping him through some lean years in the 1990s. When Pincay rode five winners during California Cup Day at Santa Anita in October, 2000, to pass the 9,000-win mark, two of his winners were saddled by Spawr.
