Racing Background: A second-generation horseman, Perkins is the son of Ben Perkins Sr., who trained in the Mid-Atlantic region for nearly 50 years … Although he spent much of his youth working at the racetrack for his father, he went to college with an open mind. “As a finance major, all the other students were reading the Wall Street Journal and I was reading the Daily Racing Form. So I kind of knew I'd end up with horses.”
Racing Career: Perkins won his first race with Diplomatic Note at Atlantic City Race Course in 1981, one race after his father took the Jersey Derby with Five Star Flight ... He won the 2000 Monmouth Park training title after finishing second in the standings the year before. He captured six stakes at the 2003 meet including the Long Branch with Max Forever, who went on to start in the Haskell ... From 2000-2002 Perkins dominated the Sorority Stakes winning with Stormy Pick (2000), Forest Heiress (2001), and Wild Snitch (2002) ... He also won graded stakes in New Jersey with Storm Tower, winner of the 1994 Salvator Mile and runner-up in the 1993 Haskell, and Sacred Honour, victor of the 1993 Sapling ... Perkins won stakes races with Joey P in ’06 and ’07 ... Currently has Wild Gams, a New Farm homebred pointing to the first running of the Filly & Mare Sprint ... "It would be nice to run a Jersey-bred in front of the home crowd," Perkins said, "especially a homebred." ... The daughter of Forest Wildcat ran off the board, appearing to have some traffic trouble at the half-mile pole.
