Strengths: He isn’t speed crazy, and has shown nice polish for a 2-year-old. Following a fourth-place finish in his career debut over two furlongs at Woodbine, he promptly rattled off four consecutive wins, including the G3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs and the G2 Saratoga Special. He won all of those races by clear margins, but in his most recent start in the G2 Futurity at Belmont, he lost a tough battle to the rising star Tale of Ekati.
Weaknesses: He’s never run farther than seven furlongs, and the bloodlines do not suggest that routing will eventually be his best game. None of the horses he defeated earlier in the year have proven to be of extremely high caliber.
In the Genes: His sire, Posse, tops the nation amongst first-crop sires for progeny earnings, and is also the leading sire of juveniles so far this year. The winner of the G3 Kentucky Breeders’ Cup at age two, Posse eventually developed into a high-class dasher, finishing fourth in the ’03 Breeders’ Cup Sprint. His dam, Kokadrie, was unraced, but she is a half-sister to the millionaire West by West.
Status: Sovereign Award winner for champion 2-year-old Canadian-bred will stay in training for 2008.
Bet You Didn’t Know: With 75 wins from 323 starts through Oct. 10, Steve Asmussen is the nation’s leading trainer of 2-year-olds.
