  • Owner(s): Jess Jackson
  • Born: Feb. 18, 1930, Los Angeles, Calif.
  • Residence: Healdsburg, Calif. and Lexington, Ky.
  • Family: wife, Barbara Banke; five children
  • Education: 1955 graduate of the University of California Berkeley's Boalt Hall School of Law
  • Professional Background: Jackson, who was raised in San Francisco, had a flourishing law practice in the ’70s, with an emphasis in real estate law ... In 1974, he and his family bought an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard in Lakeport, Calif. Jackson converted the orchard to a vineyard and began selling his grapes to local wineries. In 1982, a down-turn in the grape market forced him to make his own wine with the grapes. Production of his first bottle of wine under the Kendall-Jackson label has evolved into one of the most popular labels in the United States. Today, Jackson's wines are produced on three continents and sold under many labels
  • Racing Background: Jackson, who has had a life-long interest in horses, raced Thoroughbreds for a time in the 1960s with an uncle, Dr. I.B. Ballenger ... Looking towards Thoroughbred racing as a retirement business, Jackson entered the game in force in 2003
  • Racing Career: Is currently on target to receive his third consecutive Horse of the Year title with the filly Rachel Alexandra, who comes on the heels of two-time recipient of the award, Curlin ... After the superfilly's 20-length win in the Kentucky Oaks (G1), Jackson, in partnership with Hal McCormick, purchased her for a reported figure of between $3 and $4 million and immediately entered her in the Preakness (G1) and announced she would be bred to his own Preakness winner, Curlin, at the end of her racing career. She won that race, and subsequently the Mother Goose (G1) by 19 lengths, defeated 3yo males again in the Haskell Invitational (G1) by six lengths, before a historic defeat of older males in the Woodward Stakes (G1) by a head ... Famously denouncing the synthetic surface at Santa Anita as "plastic", Jackson has refused to send Rachel Alexandra to the Breeders' Cup, while calling for a meeting with Zenyatta in the East instead, which will likely never materialize. He has said that Rachel Alexandra will return as a 4yo, but for the rest of the year, her schedule is undetermined ... In partnership with Padua Stable and George Bolton, purchased 75% of Curlin after a smashing maiden victory in January 2007and turned him over to trainer Steve Asmussen ... Curlin went on to win the Arkansas Derby, Preakness Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup before ending the season with a run-away victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic at Monmouth Park ... By the end of '07, Jackson had bought out Padua and Bolton ... Brought back to race at four in 2008, Curlin wheeled off victories in the Dubai World Cup, Stephen Foster Handicap and Woodward Stakes before winning his second Jockey Club Gold Cup to break Cigar's record as the richest American Thoroughbred with over $10-million in earnings ... Despite his fourth-place finish in the Classic, was named Champion Older Horse and Horse of the Year for a second time ... His only other loss in 2008 was a second in the Man O' War Stakes over the Belmont Park turf course ... He currently stands at Lane's End Farm
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Purchased the 2003 $375,000 sale topper (later named Cambria Gold) at the Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training ... At the 2004 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, spent nearly $22 million to acquire 95 horses, mostly broodmares ... In 2005, acquired the former Buckram Oak Farm near Lexington, Ky., the former Adena Springs Kentucky farm near Versailles, Ky., the original Adena Springs South in Ocala, Fla., and more than 1,000 acres of the current Adena Springs South ... Named farms and racing operation Stonestreet after his father; it also is Jackson's middle name ... Broodmare band includes Maggy Hawk, the dam of champion Afleet Alex and stakes winner Unforgettable Max Maggy Hawk was bred to Curlin in 2009 ... Jackson owns interests in numerous stallions, including Afleet Alex, A.P. Indy, Awesome Again and Ghostzapper ... In Sept. 2005, filed lawsuit accusing former advisers of fraud from inflating prices that he paid for horses; in September of 2007 received a $3.5 million settlement from former bloodstock advisor Emmanuel de Seroux. Also reached out-of-court settlements with several other parties earlier in the year ... Sponsored legislation in Kentucky to protect horse owners by preventing agents from profiting from undisclosed payments and commissions. Kentucky Gov. Ernie Fletcher signed legislation, which basically prohibits dual agency without full disclosure, into law in March of 2006 ... Stonestreet concluded 2008 with Stonestreet horses having won 31 races from 147 starts and earned $2,089,061, which does not reflect Curlin's winnings in Dubai ... Thanks in part to the success of Rachel Alexandra, Stonestreet and McCormick were ranked 18th (as of Oct. 7) among North American owners with $1,990,000 in earnings, all from the filly.
