Lady Joanne
Trainer: Carl A. Nafzger Last Jockey: Calvin H. Borel Owner(s): Bentley L. Smith
/xmlfeed.aspx?action=media%26category=8%26id=27245

2007 Record: (7-4-2-0)
2007 Earnings: $808,993
2007 Win %: 57% In-The-Money %: 85%

Strengths: She’s hit the board in all ten starts, posting six wins along the way. Flashed victories in the Grade I Alabama at Saratoga, and the Grade III Dogwood and Grade II Golden Rod at Churchill Downs. She’s proven at distances upward of ten furlongs, is versatile and never gives an inch.

Weaknesses: It’s really tough to find any chinks in her armor. One might say that her sire, Orientate, has distance limitations in his pedigree, but much of his offspring have done their best work over a route of ground.

In the Genes: Her father, Orientate, took down the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Sprint en route to being named the Eclipse Award-winning dasher. He’s currently fourth by progeny earnings amongst second-crop sires. Her mother, Oatsee, produced Baghdaria, who finished seventh in the ’06 Breeders’ Cup Distaff, and her maternal grandsire, Unbridled, won both the Kentucky Derby and the Breeders’ Cup Classic in 1990.

Bet You Didn’t Know: Trainer Carl Nafzger went 16 years between Breeders’ Cup victories, capturing the Classic in ’90 with Unbridled and the Juvenile in ’06 with Street Sense. His Banshee Breeze finished second in the Distaff in consecutive years (’98 and ’99).
