Set Play
Trainer: Peter Miller Last Jockey: Brice Blanc Owner(s): Gerson Racing and Charleville Stables
/xmlfeed.aspx?action=media%26category=8%26id=27611

2007 Record: (8-2-1-2)
2007 Earnings: $255,450
2007 Win %: 25% In-The-Money %: 62%

Strengths: Outstanding foundation to her past performances with five races on her resume that each made incremental increases in distance and class. Rose to the challenge by winning the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante and stamping her class in September.

Weaknesses: Took a noticeable step backwards in the Oak Leaf when asked to tackled two turns for the first time. All five career races are on synthetic tracks, and her turf-influenced pedigree leaves a bit of doubt as to how she’ll handle conventional dirt.

In the Genes: Sire, Van Nistelrooy, finished fifth in the 2002 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile when trying the dirt for the first time. From the first crop of Van Nistelrooy, a 7-furlong stakes winner in Ireland who did not race beyond age 2. First stakes winner out of Boldy’s Reflection, who failed to register a win in her brief racing career.

Status: She was the 2007 Florida-bred 2-year-old female champion, though she has always raced on the Southern California circuit, except for her off-the-board finish in the Juvenile Fillies at Monmouth.

Bet You Didn’t Know: Set Play gets her name from the soccer formation by the same name. Her sire, after all, is named for Dutch football legend Ruud van Nistelrooy.
