Patricia Pavlish
Born: Dec. 13, 1959, Akron, Ohio
Residence: Vero Beach, Fla. and Waite Hill, Ohio
Family: husband Ed; children Ryan, John and Pepper; three grandchildren
Professional Background: The Pavlishes own Chemical Solvents, Inc.; a chemical company in Cleveland, Ohio. Patricia has a background in accounting and works with Ed as partner in both their corporate and racing interests
Racing Background: Patricia grew up around horses in rural Ohio. Ed had always had an interest in racehorses and owned a few of them. When they met and married, they knew they wanted to go into the breeding business. "When you have horses in your blood, as we both do, the horses will always be in your blood," she said
Breeding/Racing Operation: The Pavlishes own Beau Ravine Farm in Ohio and currently have seven broodmares and one yearling there ... Patricia bought a filly, Cosmic Fire, after John Ward found her for them. "We raced her for two years, and then brought her home. We were excited to have a Capote mare in our broodmare band," she said. "She threw a couple of foals that didn't do anything. Then we had a share in Lemon Drop Kid and I loved him. I thought it would be pretty good to double-up with Seattle Slew on both sides, and that's how we got Cosmonaut. And it worked out pretty well." ... Cosmonaut was raised on the farm after being foaled in Kentucky and was sold for $105,000 at the 2003 Keeneland September yearling sale ... She also bred and raced grade 2 winner Saudi Poetry (2001 Fleur de Lis Handicap) and Aeneas (six times stakes-placed and in 2003 the surprise 2nd-place finisher in the G2 Washington Park Handicap at 31-1 odds), but Cosmonaut is her best horse so far. "The horse part of our lives is fascinating. We really enjoy this part of the business, knowing the families and breeding to their strengths and away from their weaknesses," she said ... Cosmonaut, 3rd in the Mile, was the first Breeders' Cup starter for Pavlish.
