William R. Boswell

  • Family: wife Hazel, married for 54 years; six children, 17 grandchildren
  • Professional Background: Worked most of his life in the oil industry ... "I started out roughnecking in the field and worked in Port St. John, British Columbia, for a couple of years before I eventually got to Calgary and went to work for Sun Oil," said Boswell, who started his own company, Boswell Mineral Co. in 1961 ... Boswell, an indepedent oil operator, owned public companies throughout the world ... Currently is owner and CEO of Hardy Capital Corp.
  • Racing Background: "In the early 1950s, I used to go to Stampede Park when you could bet fifty cents or a dollar," said Boswell. "Around 1961, a couple of guys I hung out with claimed a horse for $1,500 with me. We claimed three or four, raced them on the circuit and had a lot of fun." ... Moved to Vancouver from 1979 to 1998 and had "17 or 18" horses at Exhibition Park
  • Racing Career: "I didn't have any horses for three or four years and was wintering in Palm Desert, Cal.," explained Boswell. "I was getting bored when I bumped into Mike Orman, a trainer who had played semi-pro hockey for a team I owned in Calgary. He bought a couple of horses for me and got me back in." Among those horses were Rabiadella, a filly, who won a pair of grade 3 grass stakes, the 1994 Senorita and 1995 Monrovia Handicap, and Lake George, who won a division of the 1995 Oceanside Stakes after finishing 18th out of 19 horses in that year's Kentucky Derby ... Mike Smith, a former trainer, bought Lake Windermere for Boswell for $32,000 at the 1997 Keeneland September yearling sale. After a brief and unspectacular career, she was bred to Lake George and produced Greg's Gold ... Smith introduced Boswell to trainer David Hofmans, who now trains the Breeders' Cup Sprint hopeful  ... Boswell named Greg's Gold after his late grandson. "He won a gold medal in skiing in the Special Olympics," said Boswell. "He was walking his bicycle across a crosswalk when he was hit by an automobile and died a few days later. He was a real good athlete and only 17. Greg loved horses. I always promised him we would name a horse together. He died just after Greg's Gold was born." ... Greg's Gold, Boswell's first Breeders' Cup starter, finished eighth in the Sprint.  
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Currently owns two full sisters to Greg's Gold, an unraced 2-year-old  and a broodmare in foal to Speightstown ... Has since sold both Lake George and Lake Windermere; Lake George privately to Ben Warren's farm in Hemet, Calif., and Lake Windermere at the 2006 Keeneland November sale in foal to Ghostzapper.
