Education: Robinson is a graduate of Ricks College (now Brigham Young University-Idaho) and Weber State University with a degree in pre-veterinary science. Bailey has a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Minnesota
Professional Background: Robinson grew up on a cattle ranch in Utah and has spent his entire life working with horses. He was a professional rodeo cowboy for about 15 years and five times qualified for the National Finals Rodeo as a steer wrestler. His son, Clint, is currently a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association. He learned about Kentucky and Thoroughbred racing while on a Mormon mission in 1977 ... Bailey, who also has a rodeo background, was a racetrack veterinarian in Florida for seven years, then became the attending veterinarian and manager at E.K. Gaylord's Lazy E Ranch in Oklahoma. After returning to Florida, Bailey and fellow Minnesota native Ken Ellenberg formed a successful pinhooking venture. Bought eventual champion and Kentucky Derby winner Thunder Gulch as a yearling and tried to resell him as a 2-year-old. Partners raced Thunder Gulch in the colt's first four races, then sold him to Michael Tabor ... Other successful pinhooks include grade 1 winners Deputy Commander, Honour and Glory and Yes It's True ... Robinson, who has known Bailey since the early 1980s, then joined Bailey and Ellenberg, creating Gulf Coast. Ellenberg no longer is a partner in the venture, which now includes Garry Millet, Jeff Dunford and Jeff Collette of Utah
Breeding/Racing Operation: At the recently concluded Keeneland yearling sale, Gulf Coast bought two session toppers: a Cherokee Run colt (out of Informative) for $325,000 and an Awesome Again-Divine Angel colt for $300,000 ... Gulf Coast bred and co-owns with WinStar Farm Cowtown Cat, a dual stakes winner in 2007. WinStar purchased Cowtown Cat for sale-topping $1.5 million at 2006 Barretts March 2-year-old sale, and Gulf Coast then bought a half-interest in the colt ... Also bred 2007 grade 3 winner Chelokee ... Purchased Henny Hughes for $180,000 at the 2004 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale. After the colt failed to meet his reserve at the 2005 Barretts March sale, Henny Hughes began his career racing for Gulf Coast and partner Martin L. Cherry; the colt was sold to Darley after he won the Tremont by 15 lengths ... Bred Added Edge, Canada’s two-year-old champion colt in 2002 who became a multiple grade 3 winner in the United States ... Bred graded stakes winners E Z Warrior and Salute the Sarge. With Murray Smith, agent, sold E Z Warrior for $1.2 million at the 2006 Barretts March sale. Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent, consigned Salute the Sarge, a half brother to Chelokee, to this year’s Barretts March 2-year-old sale, where Southern Equine Stables purchased him for $300,000. Robinson purchased Salute the Sarge’s dam, the Silver Ghost mare Dixie Ghost, in foal to A.P. Indy for $320,000 at the 1999 Keeneland November breeding stock sale. The next year, she produced the filly Mymich, who became a stakes winner ... Robinson bred multiple graded stakes winner Crafty Shaw ... Gulf Coast Bloodstock owns some 120 broodmares who are boarded at Taylor Made Farm and Viking Stud in Kentucky. Robinson and his wife, Maria, handle the breeding side of the business, while Bailey and his wife, Leslie, break and train their horses in Ocala ...
