Dr. George Todaro
Born: July 1, 1937 in New York, N.Y.
Residence: Seattle, Wash.
Family: wife, Jane; children, Thomas, Anthony and Wendy
Location: Races primarily on the West Coast
Professional Background: Todaro is founder of several biotechnology companies and is a longtime medical researcher at the University of Washington. A noted scientist, he has worked with the National Cancer Institute and National Institutes of Health. His groundbreaking research has included innovative approaches to cancer treatment, molecular cloning and developing biodiesel fuels.
Racing Background: Todaro became involved in Thoroughbred ownership when his wife bought him a 10 percent interest in a yearling as a Christmas present in 1991. He fell in love with the sport, which gives him a relaxing diversion from his scientific pursuits.
Racing Career: Owns many of his horses in partnership with Jerry Hollendorfer, his principal trainer. Together they campaigned 1996 Kentucky Oaks winner Pike Place Dancer; also owned multiple stakes winner Globalize with other partners, as well as other stakes winners Chickapin, Cappachino ... Todaro’s first Breeders’ Cup starter was Tuxedo Junction (sixth, 1998 Distaff), who he co-owned with Hollendorfer and Duncan Taylor, president of Taylor Made Farm. In 2007, his best horses, both owned in partnerships, have been Breeders' Cup Distaff runner-up Hystericalady and Bwana Bull, his first Kentucky Derby starter. That G3 winner is a half-brother to this year’s G2 Super Derby, My Pal Charlie. ... Other recent stakes winners are the fillies Rockella and Rivoltella, one of the few horses he owns outright ... Hystericalady was purchased at Keeneland in September 2004 for $125,000 by Jerry Hollendorfer in partnership with Todaro and Tom Clark's Rancho San Miguel ... With her win in the 2008 G2 Delaware Handicap, she became the richest horse in Hollendorfer's career and the richest horse to come from Northern California ... In 2008, she’s won four of seven starts. She won the 2008 G2 Fleur de Lis Handicap by seven and a half lengths, giving up nine pounds to her rivals. In the 2008 Delaware Handicap she romped home by four lengths, tackling the distance of 10 furlongs for the first time in her career. Also in August of 2008 she won the G2 vMolly Pitcher for the second time in back to back wins, taking it by nine lengths with great ease. In September 2008, running on a synthetic surface (where her record stands at 0-for-5), she struggled the entire length of the stretch after setting the pace with Santa Teresita and finished second to divisional leader Zenyatta in the G1 Lady's Secret Handicap.
Breeding/Racing Operation: He currently has about 70 horses in training with numerous trainers, plus several broodmares in California and Kentucky .... Todaro also owns 50 percent of the stallion Globalize, who stands in California ... His stable manager is Bob Cappeletti ... As of October 12, 2008, Todaro and Hollendorfer, as partners, were ranked 37th among owners with 93 victories from 311 starts and $1,685,290 in earnings.
