George Bolton

  • Professional Background: Bolton is chief investment officer/portfolio manager at WestEnd Capital Management, a San Francisco-based asset management company … He previously spent nearly 20 years at Alex Brown & Sons, where he was managing director when he left
  • Racing Background: Bolton grew up near Pimlico Race Course, and both his father and grandfather were involved in steeplechase racing … Purchased his first racehorse in the late 1980s in partnership with Bill Farish, with whom he attended University of Virginia
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: After Breeders' Cup Classic contender Curlin’s dominating maiden victory at Gulfstream Park, Bolton, Padua Stables and Stonestreet Stables formed a partnership to purchase a controlling interest in the colt; agent John Moynihan, along with trainer Steve Asmussen, arranged the deal. Bolton became a 20 percent owner of Curlin … About Curlin’s narrow victory over Street Sense in the Preakness Stakes, Bolton said, “I thought we were beat; I thought it was over. Then all of the sudden he switched leads and I thought we had a shot. I still thought we probably lost it, but then Robby put his stick up and I knew he had a good view, so I thought maybe, just maybe.” … Bolton has raced under the B.B.C. Stables banner, which was a partnership of George and his brother Charlie, and Rich Coons ... Bolton now has about 18 horses at the track, mostly owned in partnership, with trainers Steve Asmussen, Bob Baffert, John Kimmel and Christophe Clement … Other top horses he's raced include stakes winners Effectual, Forty Grams, Son of a Pistol and Rare Gift, all owned in partnership … Also owns about 10 broodmares, most of which are at Lane’s End in Kentucky … Bolton’s hobbies and interests include golf, hunting and working out ... Bolton relished his first Breeders' Cup win when Curlin dominated in the Classic, prevailing by over four lengths ... Two weeks later, Jackson and Bolton bought Sanan's share in Curlin, giving those two partners 80 percent ownership, and about a month after that, Jackson bought Bolton's share ... For his 2007 campaign, Curlin won dual Eclipse honors in 2007 as outstanding 3-year-old and Horse of the Year.
