John Glenney

  • Education: Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Texas. Did three years post-doctorate work in Germany
  • Professional Background: Retired professor of biochemistry at the University of Kentucky 1988-92 ... Founded Transduction Laboratories in Lexington in 1990. The bio-tech firm was sold to Pharmingen, a subsidiary of Becton, Dickinson and Co. and allowed Glenney to retire
  • Racing Background: Lifelong fan and horseplayer, he became actively involved in racing as a hobby after selling his company and retiring from teaching ... Developed connections to horse racing through his daughter, Jill, who rode and showed horses. Glenney is a marathon runner, and says he would not ask any of his distance runners to do anything he would not.
  • Racing Career: Together with his wife, Kim, they bought a broodmare in 1996 ... He had previously owned shares of racehorses and they had begun purchasing their own runners at 2-year-olds in training sales ... Within a year of getting involved with the breeding side of the business they decided to try their hand at training as well ... Glenney began training his own horses in 1998 and through Oct. 1, 2008, has had 40 winners and 152 placings from 579 starters ... First star was Kim Loves Bucky, who won three graded stakes in 2002, including the G3 Elkhorn Stakes at Keeneland ... Kim Loves Bucky repeated his Elkhorn victory in 2003, and retired in 2004 with six wins from 32 starts and nearly $500,000 in earnings ... The Glenneys bred, own and train Transduction Gold, who has found success in California the last few months and was most recently third in the 2008 G1 Clement L. Hirsch ... He is a half-brother to Kim Loves Bucky, and was named for Glenney's former business. "He's similar in looks and style and lately in personality - a little quirky," Glenney says. ... Transduction Gold was Glenney's only Breeders' Cup starter to date, finishing 8th in the Turf at Monmouth Park in 2007 ... In addition to a repeat trip the Breeders' Cup with Transduction Gold, the Glenneys hope to make it to the Juvenile Turf with Orthodox, an impressive maiden winner at Santa Anita on September 27
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Has 16 horses in training, mostly at Keeneland and Churchill. A Del Mar fan for 25 years, he hopes to train there every year because "it's too hot in Kentucky in the summer."... Sold his 220-acre Gardens Glenn Farm near Lexington earlier in 2008 when he "accepted an offer I could not refuse." ... The Glenneys purchased 1986 Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Lady's Secret in 1998 when she was in foal to Seattle Slew. Lady's Secret produced four colts for the Glenneys; two are retired and on their farm and one was a winner at the 2007 Del Mar meet. The day after foaling her final colt, she died of a burst uterine artery.
