James Petrey Jr.

  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Petrey's family moved from Illinois to Lexington when he was a teenager and he was instantly hooked on the horse business ... While still in his teens, he went to work for Hurstland Farms where he stayed for 12 years ... Worked for Gainsborough Farm for 10 years ... Acquired the mare Turbo Dream from Don Lane, while serving as his assistant at Hagyard Farm ... While Petrey was working at Domino Stud, Turbo Dream foaled Dream Rush, who Petrey sold for $285,000 at the 2006 Ocala Breeders' select 2-year-olds-in-training sale at Calder ... He sold Turbo Dream, his only mare, privately in 2007 because he "got an offer too good to refuse." ... Sold a half-sister to Dream Rush by Salt Lake for $122,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale ... For the last year, Petrey has been the farm manager for Don Branham's new farm, Hurricane Hills, on Paris Pike ... Dream Rush, the only Breeders' Cup starter Petrey has had, finished 5th in the 2007 Filly & Mare Sprint ... Now owned by Halsey Minor, she is on track for a second appearance in 2008.
