Samuel Rogers
Born: July 25, 1922
Residence: Leesburg, Va.
Family: wife Carolyn
Professional Background: Retired from family flour mill business, Wilkins-Rogers Inc., based in Ellicott City, Md., and the makers of Washington-brand flour and baking mixes
Racing Background: Father Samuel Rogers Sr. was partners with David Rust and William du Pont on horses dispersed by Willis Sharpe Kilmer in the late 1930s ... After World War II, the Rogerses gradually progressed from pinhooking to racing and breeding from their 60-acre farm in Virginia
Racing Career: Because of their small farm, Rogers dealt mainly in pinhooking, but often raced horses he could not resell, finding particular success with Romantic Summer, who won four times but has gone on to produce three stakes winners as a broodmare, including 2007 Breeders' Cup contender Diamond Stripes, eighth in the Classic. The striking grey gelding gained world-wide recognition when he won the 2008 Godolphin Mile on the Dubai World Cup undercard
Breeding/Racing Operation: Purchased The Acorn Farm near Ocala in 1979 to expand their breeding operation ... Daughter Lynn Rogers Rainbow and her husband Bill Rainbow manage and run the farm. Their biggest pinhooking success came with multiple stakes-winning filly Sharp Cat. Over the years they bred or sold stars Summer Guest and Miss Golden Circle.
