  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Masone became an owner in 2004 after he met trainer Mark Shuman through Steve Cooper, one of Shuman’s assistants ... Cooper has also worked as an assistant for the trainer of his uncle Michael’s horses ... After Masone enjoyed some initial success with Shuman, his life-long friend Domenico Zannino decided to buy horses and race with Shuman ... Masone now has eight horses in training, seven of them in partnership with Zannino, who runs under the stable name of Circle Z ... Heading that list is Masone’s first stakes winner Xchanger, who is owned by Masone (25 percent), Zannino (50 percent) and Shuman (25 percent) ... Xchanger, who won the Sapling at Monmouth in 2006, captured the G3 Barbaro Stakes at Delaware Park and Federico Tesio at Pimlico in 2007 ... Scheduled to run in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile, he would be Masone’s first Breeders’ Cup starter ... “Xchanger is one of those once-in-a-lifetime horses,” Masone said. “He’s like a part of the family to us." ... Masone credits the work of Shuman as playing a central role in his successful entry into the ranks of ownership ... “Mark is the most phenomenal trainer,” Masone said. “He does incredible work when you consider that he gets so many wins out of a small stable. You give him a horse, and Mark turns him into a different horse.”
