  • Born: July 4, 1941, in New York City, N.Y.
  • Residence: New York City
  • Family: wife, Catelyn; children, Kerry, Melissa, Andrew and Joshua
  • Education: Holds an undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and a law degree from Harvard
  • Professional Background: Kronfeld, who formerly practiced law in New York City, is now an investment banker, concentrating primarily in technology, media, and telephony in China ... He breeds horses in the name of Maverick Productions Ltd., which is also his movie, record, and television company
  • Racing Background: When his business interests took him to England extensively during the mid-1970s, Kronfeld bought a Thoroughbred foal while looking to buy farm property in that country. A friend then convinced him to buy a 2-year-old so that he would have something to race right away, and Kronfeld put the horse in training in England with Ian Balding
  • Breeding/Racing Operation: Kronfeld has been represented as breeder in 2009 by champion racemare Zenyatta, who has continued her unbeaten ways. The 5-year-old Street Cry mare, who has won all 13 of her starts to date, counts the G1 Vanity Handicap, Clement L. Hirsch Stakes, and Lady's Secret Stakes among her four victories this year heading into the Breeders' Cup. She was named champion older female in 2008 after winning the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic (formerly Distaff). Sold for $60,000 as a yearling, Zenyatta is out of the Kris S mare Vertigineux, who raced as a homebred for Kronfeld ... Vertigineux was named 2008 Broodmare of the Year. She also has produced G1 winner Balance, who finished sixth in the 2007 Breeders' Cup Distaff, and stakes winner Where's Bailey. She delivered a Bernardini filly in January for Kronfeld at Don Robinson’s Winter Quarter Farm, but has since been sold privately. She was bred to Henrythenavigator for 2010 ... Robinson has boarded mares and foals for Kronfeld for about 25 years. Vertigineux’s dam, For the Flag, also called Winter Quarter home until she died in February at age 31... Kronfeld was first represented in the Breeders' Cup as a breeder by Winter Quarters, who finished sixth in the 1995 Juvenile. Winter Quarters was foaled at and named for Robinson's farm near Lexington, Ky. Robinson's father bought Winter Quarter Farm in 1948, and Don took over in 1977...Kronfeld's best racehorse was European champion Mrs. Penny, whom he bought for $40,000 at the 1978 Saratoga yearling sale ... Mrs. Penny, named after Kronfeld's first wife, was champion filly at two and three in England in 1979-80 as well as champion filly at three in Ireland ... Her G1 European wins included the French Oaks, Prix Vermeille, and William Hill Cheveley Park Stakes. She also ran second in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes. In North America, she won the Queen Charlotte Handicap. “I thought, 'This is an easy game,' ” Kronfeld said, "and I've spent the last quarter of a century trying to play catch-up." ... Kronfeld sold Mrs. Penny in the mid-1980s.
