Racing Background: Learned the business from his parents, Keith and Marilyn, both trainers. He helped his parents walk horses and muck stalls by the time he was 5 and lost part of his thumb in a childhood accident while holding a horse through a chain link fence … He took out his jockey's license at age 16. Rode for three years in New Mexico, California and New York before retiring because of weight ... His brother, Cash, was the Eclipse Award apprentice jockey champion in 1979 before becoming a champion jockey in Europe ... The Asmussen family operates El Primero Training Center in Laredo, Texas
Racing Career: Reached the pinnacle of success at the end of 2008 when he earned his first Eclipse Award as outstanding trainer after being a finalist in 2004, 2005 and 2007. For the year, he blew away his own record of 555 wins in a year set in 2004 by recording 622 victories and led Curlin to a second Horse of the Year title … Curlin followed his outstanding 2007 campaign that included the Preakness and Breeders’ Cup Classic with triumphs in the 2008 Dubai World Cup, G1 Stephen Foster Handicap and G1 Jockey Club Gold Cup. The win in the Gold Cup pushed the Smart Strike horse past the $10 million mark, making him the richest American-based horse of all-time … Curlin retired to Lane’s End Farm near Lexington, Ky. following a fourth-place finish in the ’08 Classic … For an encore to 2008, Asmussen reached the 5,000 win milestone on September 11, 2009 and led sensational filly Rachel Alexandra through a campaign likely to culminate in Horse of the Year honors.
