Professional Background: Operated King Koin, a company that sold laundry equipment
Racing Background: Smith ran Frances Genter Stable for about 30 years. Among the highlights during the stable's operation were the victories by Unbridled in the 1990 Kentucky Derby and that year's Breeders' Cup Classic as well as the win by Smile in the 1986 Breeders' Cup Sprint ... Mrs. Genter died in 1992 and Smith continued to manage it until her horses were off the racetrack. The stable was disbanded at the end of 2000
Breeding/Racing Operation: Smith continues to breed and race a small number of horses for himself ... In 2006, he bred Breeders' Cup Distaff prospect Baghdaria, who finished seventh behind Round Pond ... Smith also owned and bred Solvig, who ran fourth in the 2001 Filly & Mare Turf, the only previous horse to run under his name in the Breeders' Cup ... Keeps a small number of broodmares at Gainesway farm in Lexington ... One of them was Oatsee, the dam of Baghdaria and Breeders' Cup Distaff contender Lady Joanne, winner of the 2007 Dogwood Breeders' Cup and Alabama Stakes. Smith also bred Oatsee and Mrs. Genter bred the second dam, With Every Wish ... He sold a large group of broodmares at the 2006 Keeneland January sale, including Solvig and Oatsee. Solvig, in foal to Smarty Jones, brought $950,000, while Oatsee, in foal to Langfuhr, went for $135,000 ... Smith currently has five horses in training, all with his long-time conditioner, Carl Nafzger, who trained Unbridled for the Genter stable … Although well into his 80s, Smith takes an annual duck hunting trip to Canada and still attends major races when his horses are in action … He was in attendance when Lady Joanne won the Alabama at Saratoga … Lady Joanne (pronounced “Joan-ee”) is named for his second wife.
