  • Racing Background: Started working on the New York backstretch as a hotwalker in 1970 for Hall of Fame trainer Elliott Burch; also worked as a trainer for Rokeby Stable.
  • Racing Career: Started training in 1976 and went full-time in 1989, working mainly with claimers. He won his first race at Keystone Race Track (now Philadelphia Park) in Philadelphia with Pleasure Valley in 1974 ... His first stakes success came with former claimer Peeping Tom, who went from a $40,000 tag to being Grade 1 winner (Carter Handicap) and finished ninth in the 2001 Breeders' Cup Sprint at Belmont Park ... Peeping Tom marked the beginning of a streak of stakes wins by former claimers in three straight years, scoring with Eltawaasul in 2001, Tom's Thunder in 2002 and Alysweep in 2003. The latter was prominent on the New York 3-year-old scene in the winter/spring of 2003. Also trained stakes winners Watchmon (2005 Jamaica H), Shawklit Mint (2003 Vagrancy and Broadway) and Zacocity (2004 Discovery) ... Made his second Breeders' Cup appearance in 2007 with Juvenile Fillies third-place finisher Backseat Rhythm. The filly also finished second in the G1 Frizette Stakes at Belmont Park. In 2008, she earned herself a spot in the Filly & Mare Turf with her victory in the G1 Garden City Stakes at Belmont ...  His main base of operations is in New York at Belmont Park, usually with between 20-25 horses, most of them owned by Paul Pompa Jr, the owner of Backseat Rhythm ...  His best year to date was 2003, when his horses won just under $1.7 million. Through October 10, in his career, his trainees have earned $11,904,275, with nine graded stakes wins and 20 stakes wins total ... In 2008, he watched as a horse he picked out and trained to his first career victory win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Upon the advice of Reynolds, Pompa Jr. purchased Big Brown for $190,000 at Keeneland’s April 2-year-old in training sale last spring ... Reynolds and Pompa already had experience with the family. Reynolds claimed Snake River Canyon in the winter of 2007 for $62,500 from trainer Frank Brothers at Gulfstream Park. When Snake River Canyon, Big Brown’s big brother by Gulch, ran next for $75,000, he won for Reynolds and Pompa, but was claimed back by Brothers ...  Reynolds and Pompa saw enough from Snake River Canyon to pique their interest when his half-brother was offered at Keeneland. Pompa, who has had horses with Reynolds since 2003, called his trainer and asked what he thought about buying Big Brown, who was bred in Kentucky by Dr. Gary Knapp’s Monticule. “I knew Monticule had good breeding stock,” Reynolds said in the Bloodhorse article. “Monticule is a very interesting outfit. The guy behind it (Dr. Knapp) is a genius, I think. I told Paul, Snake River Canyon wasn’t that big, but if Big Brown had size, he should buy him, and he did.” After absolutely crushing a field of maidens on the grass at Saratoga last year, Mike Iavarone and Richard Schiavo’s IEAH Stables purchased 75% interest in Big Brown from Pompa, who retained 25%. After the sale, the horse was turned over to trainer Rick Dutrow Jr. who trains the bulk of IEAH’s runners. Reynolds said that Pompa looked after him, paying him 10 percent of IEAH’s purchase price of the majority of the colt.
