Hightail
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas sent Bluegrass Hall's Hightail into the 2012 Juvenile Sprint winless in his previous eight starts at Churchill Downs, Saratoga and at Keeneland. At Santa Anita, the dark bay or brown son of Mineshaft was the longest shot on the board at 15-1, but ran like a champion.
Saving ground along the rail for the first half of the race, Hightail made a determined move from fourth to the front under jockey Rajiv Maragh. Hightail bumped slightly into odds-on favorite and race leader Merit Man in the stretch, but forged ahead to win by a nose. Hightail not only broke his maiden in the Breeders' Cup, but gave Lukas, the all-time leading Breeders' Cup trainer, his 19th win in the Championships.
