What a difference a long run with the grass beneath his feet has made for the gelding Ashleyluvssugar!
He was just an average racehorse running in optional claiming/allowance races early in his career, but when given a chance going long on the turf, Ashleyluvssugar found his true calling.
The California-bred captured his first stakes, the Grade 2 San Luis Rey, in March 2015, in his first time attempt at a mile and a half. Since then, he’s added the 2015 Grade 2 Charles Whittingham Stakes, and this year the Grade 2 Del Mar Handicap, and the Grade 2 John Henry Turf Championship in his most recent start. When he won the Del Mar Handicap, he earned an automatic berth to the Breeders’ Cup Longines Turf as it was a “Win and You’re In” race.
The gelding’s unusual name has all kinds of Ashley connections. His dam is Ashley’s Folly; co-owner Mike Mellen’s has a granddaughter named Ashley; and another of the gelding’s owners, Joe Ciaglia Jr., also has a daughter named Ashley.
