Highland Reel (Ire)

Highland Reel (IRE)

Highland Reel (IRE) seemed impossible to catch as he rounded into the stretch of the Longines Breeders’ Cup Turf. And he was.

As his massive margin dwindled in the closing yards, he still had plenty of energy to hold off the gallant late run of favored Flintshire (GB) to win by 1 ¾ lengths. In winning for the seventh time, Highland Reel boosted his bankroll beyond $7 million in a 19-race career that has spanned the globe. He remained unbeaten in the United States after capturing the 2015 Secretariat Stakes (G1) at Arlington Park.

Highland Reel was sold as a yearling for $777,485 at the Tattersalls October in Newmarket, England. Owned by Derrick Smith, Mrs. John Magnier and Michael Tabor, and trained by Aidan O’Brien, Highland Reel began his career in his native Ireland where he became a winner in his second start. He has competed in six other countries—England, France, U.S., Australia, Hong Kong and France—at 14 different tracks. Since his first two outings, he has stayed exclusively in the Graded/Group ranks, and has the distinction of winning at least one Group 1 race on three continents.

Along the way he has reeled in four upper-tier triumphs. In addition to the Turf and the Secretariat, he won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes (G1) and the Hong Kong Vase (G1).

He came to California for the 2016 Breeders’ Cup following a second place finish to stablemate Found (IRE) in the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

"He's the type of horse that's brave in front," jockey Seamus Heffernan said. "And when he wants to go, you let him go and he turns it on."
