Awesome Slew pushed his career earnings within reach of the million-dollar mark when he won the Ack Ack Stakes at Churchill Downs September 30.
“The goal for this spot was to give him an easier race,” Norman Casse, assistant to his father Mark, said after the race. “He’s been facing some of the best sprinters in the country so he needed to build his confidence back up. He did everything well today and the (one-mile) distance was perfect.”
Casse’s comment is an understatement. In his two starts prior to the Ack Ack, Awesome Slew was second to the winner and runner-up of the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1). In August, he was beaten by Sprint winner and subsequent Eclipse Award champion sprinter Drefong in the Forego Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. In July, Awesome Slew was second to Sprint runner-up Mind Your Biscuits at Belmont Park.
Awesome Slew races for his breeder, Charlotte Weber’s Live Oak Plantation, which also bred and raced his mother Slewfoundmoney. His father Awesome Again won the 1998 Breeders’ Cup Classic.
Based on 4,500 acres in Ocala, Florida, Weber’s Live Oak Stud has been churning out upper level winners for four decades. Weber’s grandfather John T. Dorrance pioneered condensed soup as the Campbell’s brand.
