Sheikh Abdullah Saeed Almaddah’s Green Mask has been nothing if not consistent over his career and against some of the top turf sprinters in the country. An excellent third last year in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint behind Mongolian Saturday — losing by only three-quarters of a length — the son of Mizzen Mast returned this year to hit the board in four turf sprint stakes, including a big effort last out in the Belmont Turf Sprint.
Trained previously by Wesley Ward, the dark bay 5-year-old is now under the care of young, high-percentage conditioner Brad Cox, and has been training up a storm at Belmont Park as he looks to give his sire his third trophy in the Turf Sprint after Mizdirection landed the race down the Santa Anita hill in 2012 and 2013.
With five wins and 14 in-the-money finishes from 22 starts this year from his horses, Almaddah is having a solid year as an owner. Green Mask became the owner's first starter in the Breeders' Cup last year.
Cox is considered one of the top young conditioners in the game. A winner of more than 500 races after just a few years on his own, the ex-Dallas Stewart assistant and Louisville native is batting 28% on the year. Cox had his first Breeders’ Cup starter in 2014 with Carve in the Dirt Mile.
