Lady Shipman (AE)
Lady Shipman is looking to up the ante this year at Santa Anita after running second to Mongolian Saturday by a neck in last year’s TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Keeneland.
The ultra-consistent 4-year-old is always in the thick of the fray, having run worse than third only three times in 20 starts. She’s won 13 of those outings, and has a pair each of seconds and thirds.
She went on a tear after breaking her maiden at Gulfstream late in her 2-year-old season, stringing together a nine-month stretch where she won eight of nine starts. She captured non-graded stakes at Pimlico, Belmont, and a pair each at Monmouth and Saratoga. In her Smart N Fancy Stakes score at the Spa, she set a new turf course record for five and a half furlongs against older gals.
The daughter of Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Midshipman was transferred from the barn of Kathleen O’Connell to Kiaran McLaughlin for this year’s campaign.
Lady Shipman finally earned her first graded stakes victory with a front-running score in the Grade 3 Royal North Stakes at Woodbine in late July this year. She was most recently sixth in the Eddie D. Stakes at Santa Anita at the end of September, but overall has won five of eight starts this year.
