An improving sophomore by a promising young stallion, American Pastime will look to play the upset card in the TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint. A son of Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Tapizar, the Bob Hess, Jr.-trained 3-year-old exits what has become a key race in Parx’s Gallant Bob Stakes at the Sprint’s six-furlong distance.
Horses to exit the Gallant Bob and subsequently do well in the Sprint include Favorite Tale, who won the Gallant Bob in 2014 and was third in the 2015 Sprint and last year’s Mind Your Biscuits, runner-up in both the Gallant Bob and Sprint in succession.
Bred in Kentucky, American Pastime is owned by Mike Mowrey and Gary Woods and did not make his career debut until March of this year when he blitzed six furlongs in 1:09 flat. He gradually made his way up the allowance ranks before shipping across the country to finish a game second to Coal Front in the Gallant Bob, including a course and distance victory at Del Mar in second-level allowance company against older horses.
Consistent (record of 3-2-0 from six starts), with ascending speed figures, a home field advantage and enviable stalking speed, American Pastime could prove one to watch as he tries to knock it out of the park in his toughest career test.
