Lord Nelson is another of this year’s TwinSpires Breeders’ Cup Sprint hopefuls who comes into the big dance riding a healthy win streak. The 4-year-old Pulpit colt has won all four of his races this year, with the last three all scores in a Grade 1 race.
His last prep, an open daylight romp in 1:08 4/5 in the Santa Anita Sprint Championship, was a “Win and You’re In” qualifier. He also won the Bing Crosby and Triple Bend Stakes this year.
“To win the [Breeders’ Cup] Sprint you have to be doing really well, be at the top of your game,” said trainer Bob Baffert, who certainly knows what it takes, having won the Breeders’ Cup Sprint four times. “Post position is so important, the break is important. The Sprint is a difficult race to win, but if you have the right kind of horse you can do it, and so far, Lord Nelson looks like the right kind of horse. He likes this track and he hasn’t lost this year.”
Spendthrift Farm bought the chestnut privately after he ran third in the Malibu Stakes behind 2015 Sprint winner Runhappy at Santa Anita last December. He will stand at that Kentucky farm upon retirement. A stakes winner in all three years of racing, Lord Nelson has finished first or second in seven of eight sprint starts, six of them in graded races. His earnings stand at $958,271.
