Land Over Sea

Land Over Sea

Land Over Sea has chased the undefeated 3-year-old filly Songbird — a lot. That would be six times over two seasons of racing to be exact.

The daughter of Bellamy Road was second behind Songbird in Del Mar Debutante and in the Chandelier Stakes last year at two. She also finished behind her in the Breeders’ Cup when she checked in seventh.

This year, she chased her in the Las Virgenes Stakes in early February and in the March 5 Santa Ysabel Stakes, finishing second both times.

A change of scenery and the absence of that rival resulted in Land Over Sea’s first graded victory when she captured the Fair Grounds Oaks in March. She was second in the Kentucky Oaks as well.

Land Over Sea has fallen off that form somewhat since, running off the board in the Black-Eyed Susan and G1 Belmont Oaks. She finished fourth in Songbird’s most recent romp, the Cotillion Stakes at Parx Racing Sept. 24. Both fillies will face tough older mares for the first time in the Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff.

Land Over Sea has sold at auction twice, bringing $42,000 as a yearling, then $130,000 as a 2-year-old in training. Dennis O’Neill, brother to trainer Doug, made the purchase for Reddam Racing. O’Neill also picked out dual Classic winner I’ll Have Another for $35,000 as a 2-year-old.
