Avenge will face her greatest challenge yet in the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1), but thus far she has risen to the occasion when asked.
She earned a guaranteed place in the Breeders’ Cup by winning the “Win and You’re In” Rodeo Drive Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita October 1. The victory served as an anniversary gift for owner Ramona Bass and her husband Lee, who were vacationing in Italy on race day.
“I know they stayed up to watch,” their son Perry said shortly after the race. “I wish they were here, but it’s good to be here in their stead.”
In winning her Grade 1 debut, the improving Avenge capped a three-race winning streak that began with an allowance race victory July 24 and was followed by the John C. Mabee Stakes (G2) at Del Mar on September 4.
Avenge was a $650,000 purchase at Fasig-Tipton’s selected yearling sale in Saratoga Springs, New York in 2013. She earned her first career win in her fourth start early in her 3-year-old season. She then won her stakes debut before finishing off the board in her next three starts prior to her current winning streak.
“We didn’t know if she could get the mile and a quarter (in the Rodeo Drive), and we didn’t know if she could get the mile and an eighth in the Mabee,” Perry Bass said. “She surprised us there and she got the lead here. She just cruised.”
