After finishing second in her career debut, Jaywalk scored three consecutive victories, progressively moving up in class. Her most recent win came in the Frizette Stakes at Belmont, earning her a spot in the Tito’s Handmade Vodka Juvenile Fillies. In her first time around two turns, front-running Jaywalk cruised to a 5 ¾ length victory, beating rivals that included favorite Covfefe. Jaywalk was ridden by Joel Rosario for trainer John Servis and owners Leonard Green and Cash is King Stable.
“I was very impressed, I didn’t think the distance would be an issue, but I also didn’t expect her to go to the front,” Servis said. “So, it was visibly impressive.”
"She wanted to go to the front," Rosario said. "I thought there was a lot of speed on paper and then John told me just let her break and let her run however she wanted. I just let her go ahead and be happy and she really handled it. She looked like she would keep going at the quarter-pole and her long stride she really handled the trip well.”
The gray or roan filly’s four races were contested at four different tracks: Monmouth, Parx, Delaware and Belmont. At Parx, where she broke her maiden, she won by 7 ½ lengths.
“She ships well. She’s been all over the mid-Atlantic region,” Servis said. “She has a lot of class and is a very smart filly. She doesn’t get too excited about anything.”
Jaywalk’s name is a play on her father’s name, Cross Traffic. Cross Traffic won the 2013 Whitney Invitational at Saratoga.
Rosario has competed in 93 Breeders’ Cup races and has finished in the top three in 35 of them.
Servis is looking for his first Breeders’ Cup win, but he is no stranger to high profile winner’s circles, having trained 2004 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes winner Smarty Jones. The following year, Jaywalk co-owners Cash is King Stables were in Triple Crown contention with 2005 runner Afleet Alex.
Servis’s brother, Jason, also trains and has several Breeders’ Cup candidates of his own.
