Carina Mia solidified her status as one of her generation’s best when she rallied to capture the Acorn Stakes (G1) June 11 at Belmont Park. The triumph set up her for the daunting task of challenging champion Songbird, winner of the 2015 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner.
Carina Mia was ready and willing for the test but she was not able to catch Songbird, who cruised to victory in the Coaching Club American Oaks (G1) July 24 at Saratoga Race Course. Carina Mia became another valiant runner-up to Songbird who stretched her undefeated streak to nine that afternoon.
While her resume is not as spectacular as Songbird’s, it certainly packs a punch. Except for one fourth-place effort, Carina Mia has not been worse than second in her seven starts. Her record includes Grade 2 wins in the Golden Rod and Eight Belles Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Carina Mia races for Goncalo Borges Torrealba’s Three Chimneys Farm, which purchased her for $410,000 at the Keeneland September yearling sale. The operation’s stallion roster includes 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up Will Take Charge and 2011 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Caleb’s Posse.
She is trained by Bill Mott, who has won the Distaff six times, including in back to back years with multiple champion Royal Delta (2011 and 2012).
