Trainer Mark Casse will be trying to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf for the second consecutive year after capturing the race last year with Catch a Glimpse, who was subsequently crowned Canada’s Horse of the Year.
Casse was reluctant to compare the two fillies after La Coronel won the JP Morgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G3) at Keeneland Oct. 12. Both fillies showed a definite affinity for turf racing early in their careers and both earned their way to the Breeders’ Cup in “Win and You’re In” races.
“They are different kinds of fillies,” Casse said. “La Coronel is a really good horse and comparing her with Catch a Glimpse, who is really a good horse, I’d guess they are equal.”
La Coronel was first offered at public auction as a weanling at the 2014 Keeneland November sale. She failed to reach her owners’ minimum price and was listed as reserve not attained on a final bid of $37,000. She reappeared the next year at the Keeneland September yearling sale and this time her owners let her go for the same $37,000. She blossomed under saddle and was purchased for $375,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. 2-year-olds in training sale.
